Quick setup ----------- To install, copy the INFOCOM.APP file into the \APP\ directory using one of Psion's serial links. The same binary will run on both the Series3 and 3a. Install any infocom data files in an \IDF\ directory, preferably on an SSD, and make sure they have an .IDF extension. Select a game-file from the system screen to start it running. If there is insufficient memory available, the application will fail silently. You will need somewhere between 70 and 90K of memory available to start a game on the S3a depending upon the game (slightly less on the S3 or for a second game running at the same time.) To save and restore, either type the filenames in the usual way or use the menu commands. The file selector expects that files will be stored in the \SAV\ directory using a .SAV extension. The appropriate file selector can also be pulled up by using the appropriate menu item after the save/restore command has been typed. Since version 1.5, the Psion version has sprouted a Fairway style registration system to get rid of the `nag' screens. This allows users to disable the copyright messages, which otherwise appear on save and restore operations, without having to reinstall the interpreter. More details ------------ Note that 1.6 uses more memory than 1.4, basically because a) The code restructuring aimed for clarity rather than size (or speed). b) The 3a support used extra workspace, mainly to handle reflowing the text when zooming. c) The binary contains multiple sprites. The code has been trimmed significantly, and the binary has in fact grown only slightly despite all the additions, but the heap size has actually increased. A Series3 only version, without the extra baggage of 3a support, is under consideration, but the saving may not be worthwhile. The increased memory usage may mean that some games which it was just feasible to run under 1.4 will no longer work under 1.6. Series3 ------- NOTE: This application has not been tested on a genuine S3. It seems to work successfully in compatibility mode on a S3a, but this is not definitive. Given the increased heap size, and limited changes on an S3 (the only significant one is the status window support), it may be worth using 1.4e in preference. If required, choose one of the supplied font files, rename it to INFOCOM.FON and copy it to the same directory as the Infocom application. If this font file cannot be found, the system font will be used instead. The supplied fonts are based on the Schumacher fonts supplied with release 5 of the X-window system. The technology used to extract these fonts is based on BBC Basic programs and Psion's font compiler software. Basically 5X8 is slightly narrower than the standard system font, while 6X8 is slightly wider. The 6X6, 5X6 and 4X6 fonts cram increasingly more into the screen at the cost of readability. Even 6X6 is not recommended for prolonged use. If you have access to a copy of the font used by the Series3 Spreadsheet, this can also be used with all output mapped to upper case; this is preferable to 4X6. Alas, the only way I know to get hold of this font is to carve it out of the spreadsheet application, which makes distributing it slightly dubious. Series3a -------- The font file support present for the Series3 is not enabled when running on the 3a since this has been superseded by the ability to switch between the standard fonts at will. This causes problems on later (version 4 and 5) infocom games, such as Sherlock, AMFV and BorderZone. Basically these games read the screen geometry when starting and ignore any changes, so the status line is always drawn with a width appropriate for the initial screen geometry. There seems to be no way around this problem short of patching the original games. The game will still run, but the status line may be not be fully visible in some font sizes. It is possible to create a list for saved positions and automatically start the interpreter, load the appropriate game and restore the position simply by selecting an item from the list. To do this, go to the system screen, point to the infocom icon and type uE (Create New List from the Special menu). Now fill in the dialog as follows Directory for files: \sav <- Note leading \ Extension for files: sav Icon: Default * Save list as: Name InfoSave * Disk Internal * The items marked (*) can be modified to alter the icon displayed above the list, the name shown when no files are present and where the alias file defining the list will be created. Note the alias will created next to the infocom icon, but can be moved using u/ and uI. NOTE: The automatic restore will only work on positions saved from 1.6d or later copies of the interpreter. If you have any positions you saved from earlier versions, these will need to be resaved from 1.6d before they will work.
